Story #03 - The Thanksgiving Banquet

In November of 2002, I was asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at a Thanksgiving Banquet of civic leaders, and their families, near our university in Santa Cruz.  At one point when I began suggesting some of the things for which we can be thankful in America, I told them about the “power of a dime” in Africa.  Over to my right, I could see a lady emptying her coffee cup and put several dimes in it.  Then, to my amazement, she began passing it around.  It ended up going around every one of those many tables, even while we were doing other things.  By the time we had finished the evening, they gave me the cup that now had 171 dimes in it.
